Dallas Cowboys Take Dez Bryant
Posted by: | Comments
Jerry Jones got his man. Dez Bryant is officially a Dallas Cowboy.
The Cowboys traded up three spots with New England – from No. 27 to No. 24 in the first round – to draft the talented yet embattled Oklahoma State wide receiver, a pre-draft visitor to Valley Ranch rumored to be a draft-day target despite answering persistent questions about his character.
In addition to swapping first-round picks, the Cowboys traded their third-round pick (90th overall) for the Patriots’ fourth-round pick (119th overall). The Cowboys’ current remaining draft picks are No. 59 (second round), No. 119 (fourth round), No. 125 (fourth round), No. 196 (sixth round) and No. 234 (seventh round).
Under the NFL’s new draft format, the second and third rounds are scheduled for Friday. Rounds 3-7 are Saturday.
Bryant, generally considered a top-10 talent, was ruled ineligible for most of the 2009 season by the NCAA after reportedly lying about a meeting with Deion Sanders. His on-field talents are undeniable, however.
In 28 games over his three-year college career, Bryant had 147 catches for 2,425 yards (16.5 avg.) and 29 touchdowns. The Cowboys also valued him as arguably the strongest kick returner in the draft.
Now he’ll join a Cowboys receiving corps that includes first-time Pro Bowler Miles Austin, Roy Williams and Patrick Crayton.
Jones was coy this week when asked about trading up for a potentially sliding receiver like Bryant – circumstances eerily similar to the 1998 draft, when Jones passed on troubled but gifted wideout Randy Moss.
This time, the Cowboys pounced on tremendous value in the late first round.
High-fives and handshakes were made in the Cowboys’ war room after the pick. The Cowboys had also been rumored to attempt to trade up for Texas safety Earl Thomas, who went 14th overall to Seattle.
